Hand-picked in the Chiapas region of Mexico, this arabica light roast coffee is roasted weekly in Dorset. Our coffee guru's chose this high grade coffee bean because of it's nutty, fruity flavours and zingy aromas. Our House Lighter Roast is a fantastic example of why we love light roasted coffee beans.
We're huge fans of this Mexican single origin. It's our go-to roast when we're using the batch brewer, making a pour over or using any of our manual filter brewers. Roasted until we hear the first crack, you can expect almond, berry fruit and vanilla tasting notes from the bright and zesty specialty coffee.
But what makes this the best light roast coffee ever? Mexican coffee is unique is it's flavour pallet, and well-known for being light bodied and nutty in flavour. Over 95% of the beans grown in Mexico are Arabica grown at 900 m.a.s.l or above.
Our House Lighter Roast stands out from the crowd, using a washed process to maximise the flavours. It's hand-picked at an altitude of 1750m by farmers we know by name. We only work directly with small, community-led farms to ensure the best-quality beans.
Our favourite way to brew light roast coffee is with paper filters. Paper filters are known to create a light bodied brew, as they catch most of the sediment that tends to sit at the bottom of your mug. As our House Lighter Roast has fruity undertones, it lends itself to the black coffee drinkers. We typically reach for our pour over when we're about to brew this roast, but the One Brew is a great second choice.
Our preground filter coffee can be used straight away and is compatible with the One Brew, cafetiere's, filter brewers such as the Brew It Stick and Aeropress. Follow the instructions on your coffee maker to make a delicious brew at home, work or on the go.
We always recommend whole bean coffee for the best tasting cup. If you choose whole bean, you will need to grind your coffee before you can brew it. Some coffee makers have integrated grinders, but in most cases you will need to invest in order to make great tasting coffee.
The Core All Grind Plus offers 50 grind settings from fine to coarse, allowing you to grind your coffee beans for every type of brewer. Below are our grind size recommendations and settings for the Core All Grind Plus so you can experiment with different styles of coffee.
Grind Size Setting Recommendations:
Cold Brew | Cafetiere | Filter | Moka | Espresso | |
Grind Size | Coarse | Medium Coarse | Medium | Medium Fine | Fine |
Grind Setting | 50-44 | 44-34 | 34-15 | 15-7 | 7-1 |
Is light roast coffee less acidic?
Light roast coffee is more acidic than darker roasted beans, but much less bitter. This is because the natural oils, flavours and caffeine stay locked within the bean and you'll experience much brighter, fresher flavours with light roasted coffee beans.
Is light roast coffee stronger than dark roast coffee?
Light roast coffee is stronger in caffeine content than dark roast beans. This is because light roast coffee is taken out of the roaster after the first crack, before the natural coffee oils start to break down. What this means is that your light roast coffee is stronger, but also withholds the natural flavours of that particular bean varietal. Our current House Lighter Roast is nutty in flavour and bursting with aromas, typical of single origin Arabica beans from Mexico.
Is light roast coffee more bitter?
The coffee roasting process alters the taste of the beans quite dramatically. When you light roast your coffee beans, you'll get flavours that represent that particular varietal - for example our House Lighter Roast is nutty with vanilla notes. The darker you roast your coffee, the more of the natural oils will disappear leaving you with that intense, bitter tasting coffee more typical in Italy or served as espresso.
Can I use filter ground coffee in a cafetiere?
Filter ground coffee is perfect for use when brewing a cafetiere coffee. The fine grind size allows for more coffee to be in contact with the hot water, making for a stronger, more flavoursome brew. The metal filter in the cafetiere is still fine enough to capture the grounds, delivering a clean cup of coffee. Due to the finer grind size of the coffee, it is recommended to reduce the brewing time slightly, aiming for 4 minutes instead of 6.
What is the best coffee to use for a cafetiere?
The truth is, it’s impossible to say the ‘best coffee for use in a cafetiere’ as everyone will have their own preferences on taste. Our Mexican lighter roast is our most popular coffee here at Barista & Co. With undertones of almond, berry fruit and vanilla, our house roast is best when enjoyed black, allowing the delicate flavours to deliver without compromise.
